When the artist died in 2013, he left behind a collection of more than 40.000 photographs, most of which had never been publicly shown or exhibited. There he encountered Rothko and the Abstract. Born in Pittsburgh, he spent the 1940s and 1950s in New York, in an intensely creative environment where ideas from Europe and America came together and intermingled. Saul Leiter’s photographs, especially his color works shot on the streets of New York, are among some of the best photographic works from the 20th century.
